Some bakeries sell bread. Bird in Hand Bakeshop sells the reason people drive an hour out of their way and don't complain about the trip. Rated 4.8 stars across nearly 1,800 reviews, this little shop on Gibbons Road has earned a devoted following through the kind of baking that makes people rank their purchases on the drive home: apple dumpling first, peach pie second, blueberry pie third.

The pecan sticky bun alone has its own fan club. Regulars know to heat it up at home, letting the caramel seep back into every fold. The pepperoni and cheese bread and the sourdough loaves pull in a different crowd, the ones who come for something savory and leave with a pie box tucked under one arm. For larger gatherings, same-day orders are possible, but calling ahead guarantees your loaves come out of the oven timed exactly to when you need them.

This is Bird in Hand, PA, a village where the pace is slower by design and the baking reflects it. Nothing here is rushed, and you can taste the difference.

What We Offer

The bakery's reputation rests on its pies and sticky buns, but the full case rewards anyone willing to browse. Fruit pies rotate with the seasons, so a summer visit brings peach and blueberry alongside the year-round classics. The apple dumpling, a whole apple wrapped in buttery pastry and baked until golden, has become the shop's most talked-about single item.

Bread lovers have their own reasons to stop in. Sourdough loaves and pepperoni cheese bread share shelf space with whatever came out of the oven that morning. For special occasions, custom bread orders placed the day before ensure everything arrives fresh. The ice cream and confectionery side of the shop rounds out the experience, making it easy to turn a quick errand into a full afternoon treat.

“Cute little store. Bread was incredible pepperoni and cheese and regular sour dough. Wish they would have single donuts. Will go back again.”

"Known for their pies and sticky buns. However my favorite item was the apple dumpling. 1) Apple dumpling 2) Peach pie 3) blueberry pie 4) pecan sticky bun (Heat up the pecan sticky bun at home. The pecans are better roasted.) 5) unsweeted cherry pie (only if you like cherries) Grabbed one pie for less than $10. All natural, no preservatives."

"I often have big orders of bread for different occasions! I order the day before to make sure its done fresh for what i need! Altho they always have fresh bake goods in stock but if you want lets say more than 4 dozen you probably want to call in an order the day before cause their stuff sells fast and theres no guarantee you’ll be able to get yours unless you ordered it and they have it ready in the back for you! Super nice and friendly costumer service and their bread is always top notch. Around Lancaster area, You know its gonna be a good meal when you have bird and hand bake shop make your dinner rolls (sausage rolls etc! ) for dinner! ☺️"

"Had the pretzel breakfast sandwich, quite good, hot and fresh. Coffee was also quite good. They sell quite a lot of fresh bakery items and gourmet canned foods and condiments. They have a good selection of fresh ice cream, cones and cups. This is a really nice Amish spot with picnic tables and farm animals around, great spot for kids."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bird in Hand Bakeshop most known for?

The shop is best known for its pies and pecan sticky buns, but the apple dumpling consistently earns the top spot in customer reviews. Peach pie and blueberry pie are also favorites, especially when local fruit is in season.

Can I place a custom or large bread order?

Yes. Calling ahead the day before is the best way to guarantee your order is baked fresh and ready at the time you need it. The shop typically has fresh baked goods in stock daily, but advance orders ensure availability for larger quantities.

Do you sell individual donuts or pastries?

Some customers have noted they wish individual donuts were available. It's worth calling ahead or checking in store to see what single-serve items are available on a given day, as the selection can vary.

Where exactly is the bakery located?

The bakeshop is at 542 Gibbons Road in Bird in Hand, PA 17505, in Lancaster County's Amish Country. It's a straightforward drive from Lancaster city and easily combined with other stops along the Route 340 corridor.

What should I do with the pecan sticky bun when I get home?

Heat it up. Reviewers consistently recommend warming the pecan sticky bun at home so the caramel softens and works back into the layers. A few seconds in the microwave or a short stint in a low oven makes a real difference.

Does the bakery also serve ice cream and other sweets?

Yes. In addition to baked goods, the shop operates as an ice cream shop and confectionery, so you can pick up a scoop or browse the sweets selection alongside your bread and pie order.

What are the best items to buy on a first visit?

Start with an apple dumpling, a fruit pie (peach or blueberry when available), and a pecan sticky bun. If you want something savory, grab a loaf of pepperoni cheese bread or sourdough. That covers the highlights most regulars swear by.
